Thank you, Gabriela. I also sing over all remains displayed in museums. It sometimes takes a long time. Many of the rites they received at death may have ancestralized them - installed the individuals into their ranks - with good rites and conscious memory; but many may have been just consigned to the earth - we simply do not know without a clear context - so I try and do that for them.

Hi Caitlín! Just catching up on comments after an intensive period of writing on my manuscript, followed by some much-needed annual leave.

Thank you for this. What you’re naming - the care given at death, and the uncertainty around what rites were or weren’t performed - feels very important to hold honestly. We don’t know the full contexts, and that not-knowing asks for humility rather than projection. Your gesture of singing acknowledges that gap without trying to fill it with certainty. It seems a way of offering presence rather than explanation, and I appreciate the care and restraint in how you describe it.
